SG50 National Day Long Weekend – How did I celebrate?

I hope everyone has had a happening SG50 weekend! Besides going for NDP yesterday (which I will cover in a separate post) and spending time with my girls over the holiday, I did 2 things that typical Singaporeans have done last week.

Not difficult to guess la…

1. CELEBRATE WITH FOOD AT WORK!

My office celebrated National Day last Thursday in a really big way. Our breakfast and lunch was totally filled with local delicacies!

11180619_10207032812677785_3543253122507571706_n

Donned in red and white, armed with our lovely flags after breakfast!

Lunch was the main highlight. We ate so much that we couldn’t believe it ourselves.

11794551_10207033492174772_9180556632389802466_o

Kailin, Serene and I shared all these. We were going “Mmmm! Mmmmm! MMMMMMMMM!” all the way, while reassuring ourselves that it was okay to eat so much…

11110056_10207033492254774_6995118292004321411_o

As you can see, that day was my cheat day. Typically I don’t touch anything with wheat eg bread.. murtabak… mantou!

11844953_10207033492574782_7860614536951625132_o

This was one of the food lines in the cafe – all mouth-watering and yummilicious-looking.

11105212_10207033492814788_164297716764159808_o

They also made Ramly burgers that did not look or taste like Ramly burgers lolol.

11856279_10207033493094795_5625602042064822076_o

Very good chicken rice – maybe they bought from Boon Tong Kee..

11221505_10207033493174797_8724972941756516734_o

And they even had this ice-cream booth, like the ones you see along Orchard Road!

11823113_10207033493494805_8645866943339085076_o

I probably haven’t had this for like 10 years.

11822980_10207033493934816_649373063263304524_o

We were super duper full already, but just couldn’t help it but to have a serving of the ice cream with colourful bread. We wished our tummies were big enough to have maybe 5 servings though.

And all our other colleagues sitting with us were amazed at our eating capacities.

~

2. HAVEN’T BOUGHT NICE STUFF FOR MYSELF FOR A FEW MONTHS ALREADY, SO I DID ONLINE SHOPPING!

hahahaha.

Let me show you what I bought!

IMG_5378

A simple T-shirt dress.  I bought size S (which is what the model is wearing – looks baggy enough for me I HOPE.

Even if it arrives and I realize I cannot fit, I shall lose enough weight to fit!

IMG_5371The Korean trend is so getting into me.

Song Jihyo – Running Man cast member

Park Shin Hye – female lead for “Pinocchio” and “The Heirs”

Choi Jiwoo – female lead for “Winter Sonata”

The Korean trend is so getting into me. Seeing all these celebrities wearing sunnies has made me feel like getting a pair, so I found this really cute pair with the nose props! And it’s CHEAP hehe.

But, I may just turn out to look like this, after all the feasting last week:

Shrugs.

And the last item I bought on Zalora was this:

IMG_5370

I fall in love with anything beige or light brown. And coupled with pretty gentle florals, what’s not to like?

And i just realized that Topshop Singapore is coming to Zalora soon – YAY, another brand to buy from!

Yoplait Petit Miam – Great Yogurt for Toddlers!

I am so glad my toddler takes after me in terms of her taste buds.

i.e. she eats anything, like me.

Granted, her taste buds may change as she grows up, like how my elder girl has somehow become so picky over her food choices now compared to a few years back. I just hope my toddler will remain an easy eater, FOREVER. I have enough picky eaters at home!

One of her favourite snacks is yogurt, because it’s like partially melted ice cream. I don’t give my kids ice cream, so yogurt is the next best alternative. I have tried the following 2 types of yogurt that are suitable for toddlers (they can be found at NTUC Fairprice Finest):

  1. Mundella Yoghurt for Babies & Toddlers – they are quite alright but portion is a bit too big for a snack so I usually just scoop half out for the toddler. And last week when I bought a few of these, they tasted funny (not expired yet) and I had to throw them away. WASTE OF MONEY.
  2. Mundella Little Greek Ones – Even bigger portions, so I scoop half and cap it back (they have a nice sturdy plastic cap) for next day use. I like the fact that they use Greek Yogurt which is more dense and  creamy. Downside is, they have rough bits of fruits and puree inside. I find them too sweet and artificial, so I usually will scoop it out – a bit wasted and also need to spend extra time scooping it out and if your toddler is getting impatient waiting, it’s not exactly a fun thing to do.

I finally found my perfect toddler yogurt in Yoplait Petit Miam.

IMG_4781This range is suitable for babies aged 1 year and older. I started my toddler on yogurt when she was nearly 2 years old, because my mum (who is babysitting my girls) didn’t really like the idea of giving cold food to babies. Many old folks think that babies who eat cold food will end up with coughs.

IMG_4782It comes in a 12-pack. If I remember correctly, the price is about $14-$15. This can last me about 2 weeks – I give my toddler 1 portion almost every evening. The portions are just nice for a snack!

To me, I prefer giving yogurt much more than biscuits/ cereal bars/ bread because the latter items contain wheat which can cause gluten intolerance and also grains don’t have much nutritional value. Yogurt, on the other hand, gives healthy gut bacteria to ensure smooth digestion and bowel movements and has lots of protein. My toddler gets enough carbs from her 2 meals of double-boiled porridge so she needs protein more!

IMG_4783Not exactly the best wholesome food you can find (this has added sugar, thickener, fructose, vegetable gums) but compared to ice cream/ cookies/ cakes, I rather give this la.

IMG_4785These yogurts have no bits of fruits inside, its all yogurt so I don’t have to spend time scooping out extra sweet puree and keep the toddler waiting. I just tear out the top seal, lick a bit of yogurt from the seal to make sure it tastes okay, chuck a spoon in and the toddler can start enjoying!

IMG_47843 flavours – Strawberry, Banana and Vanilla.

IMG_4786Here’s a cup of half-eaten Vanilla yogurt. The cup is just nice for the toddler to hold. Very cute!

Besides this, I will also sometimes share my Dairy Farmers Greek Style Yogurt with the toddler (not because I want to share, it’s because she will give the if-u-dun-share-i-will-start-to-cry look). If you eat it alone it can be quite sour, so I always add in some honey and the toddler LOVES IT. Do note that some babies can be allergic to honey, so always give just a bit to test first.

And the best thing about yogurt is, it’s a great food to train self-feeding. Most of it should end up in the mouth, that is! haha.

iHerb.com – Best Price for my Make Up and Supplements!

I buy from iHerb more than I buy dresses online – that’s how much I love iHerb XD

Just to share my most recent buys that just arrived early this week!

20141216_203001

I have been using e.l.f. Translucent Mattifying Powder for months now – it’s very compact and good for touching up. My face also stays matte for a good amount of time. and it’s only USD3.00!

This time round I also bought their Kabuki brush and also their Mineral Foundation (loose powder type) – as a finishing to my Odbo BB cream base when I use it on some weekends.

On the bottom left – that’s the free gift! I THINK it’s an opener for.. snack packets?

20141216_202923

My elder girl has been eating these as well – for such supplements it’s hard to see whether there’s improvement or not.. But I like the brand Childlife (since GNC carrys it) and iHerb has the best price 🙂

20141216_202911

Sweet potato puffs for my toddler – best price at iHerb too – cheaper than NTUC!

20141216_202844

Almond milk for my own consumption – I now take it with rolled oats (I bought a huge packet some time ago, now trying to finish them =_=). They are also a good liquid for my protein powder too.

20141216_202831

And lastly, Sambucol for the whole family! literally – my whole family takes it 🙂

I was just looking through my order history and i realised that I order from iHerb very regularly (although I don’t really keep track)..

These are just the most recent 10 orders – I’ve bought from them 15 times in total!

GoNuts! Nut Butters – Healthy Home-made Spreads for the Family!

I personally do not eat spreads for one simple reason – they are usually filled with high sugar/ salt content. The only occasion where I eat spreads is when I am being served bread in a restaurant with some salted butter. Other than that I do not buy them for consumption.

I am no expert, but ‘hydrogenated’ tells me that this ingredient is not natural. Sugar and salt are also processed ingredients.

This is even worse – “modified”…”reduced”… “artificial”!!!

Yes I can be anal if I want to.

To be honest, it’s not easy to stay 100% natural in our food choices. I sometimes eat up the leftover Duke Bakery bread which the family cannot finish. I sometimes drink a hot cup of instant oat cereal in the office coz it’s simply too cold. It’s really not easy to eat like a caveman in our modern society where processed food rules the supermarket and we sometimes are unable to tell whether an item is processed or  not even!

But we really should try to eat the best we can – because food is where we get our energy and we should get optimal energy without having to suffer from any potential side effects the food may bring. I jus read from my Facebook wall – my friend wrote “we should eat to live, and not live to eat”.

Eat to Live –> longevity and optimal health

Live to Eat –> you may still be healthy and normal – but you will never know how much more alive and gorgeous you will feel UNLESS you start eating right. Also, you may still live to 70 if you live to eat. But you probably will live 10 years longer if you start eating right!

Everytime we eat, we are depositing either good or bad stuff into our body. You gotta decide for yourself. *reminder to MYSELF too*

About GoNuts! Nut Butters

10628149_1501042333514211_5666509669293271330_n

GoNuts! is founded by a lovely couple who have the same beliefs as me in eating clean. Check out their Facebook Page too!

I managed to connect with Michael who passed me some samples of their nut butters to review 2 weeks ago. I went into their website and checked out the ingredients that are inside those butters:

Capture

See for yourself – don’t these ingredients just tell you how healthy these butters are, compared to the ones above?

20141207_165740

Thank you GoNuts! for giving me a chance to try your products 🙂

The 4 butters I tried – Honey Hazelnut, Classic Macadamia, Cocoa Hazelnut, Cashew Ginger

20141207_165901

Cashew goes very nicely with ginger to give a nutty savoury smell. When you eat it, you definitely can taste the ginger!

20141207_165935

This was the first butter I tried coz I like anything with honey in it! You still can see tiny hazelnut bits (I don’t mind it at all, gives a crunchy bite!) and the natural sweetness of the honey is not too overpowering too. Very well-balanced.

20141207_170303

This was the 2nd butter I tried coz I like anything with cocoa too ahahah. This was rich and satisfying – think Nutella without the horrid sugar!

20141207_170337

This was the last one I tried (coz it sounds more boring than the rest haha) BUT this was the one I eventually like the most! This butter is savoury and maybe because I like macadamias (tell me who doesn’t!) so it is so yummy! It’s perfect with ANYTHING!!!

20141207_170459

If you are someone who is practising the caveman diet i.e. no grains, these nut butters are a great addition to your smoothies. You can add nut butter into your blend of almond milk and a banana. As a dip, they go great with fruits such as sliced apples/ pears/ bananas too.

If you are someone who is just eating clean and are okay with eating grains, then you have a lot more stuff you can eat the nut butter with.. spread it over bread, crackers!

Here’s what I did!

20141208_084658

Honey hazelnut with my rolled oats and almond milk.

20141209_120741

And this was with classic macadamia!

It’s such a good feeling to know that you are eating clean and not putting nonsense into your body! If you are interested, do give them a buzz at GoNutsSg@gmail.com!

Angus House at Takashimaya + Gucci Spree

A few days ago I realised that I had difficulty closing my LV wallet. A closer look revealed that the button clasp is spoilt!

I told hubby and he went “Finally eh?”

For 8.5 years I felt almost imprisoned by this wallet. Coz it never seemed to spoil! Canvas is really lasting man. Trust me, I don’t even take care of it. It was used roughly and it still looks damn good. I also liked the fact that it could contain everything (good for dory me) and I didn’t need to bring an extra card holder or coin purse.

So, I went on a hunt for a new wallet! Finally decided to get one from Gucci after maybe 2 days of browsing online. I was very tempted to get a Chanel Camellia long wallet you know..

image

This one. I love love love the floral design!

But…. The zip for the coin compartment inside is PLASTIC.

I dunno about you,  but I find plastic zips extremely disturbing. I cannot pay sgd1300 for this chanel wallet with a plastic zip.

I browsed through other Chanel wallets – nearly all of them have plastic zips leh! I’m stupefied.

So I saw this gucci wallet that had a metallic zip!

image

Ok la, maybe get this,  I thought.

So the next day hubby and I went Takashimaya after work to get my wallet. But not before going for dinner first coz we were super hungry 🙂

Naturally we went Angus House coz hubby missed the rib eye.

image

I thought the tree didn’t quite match the restaurant interior..

image

We were there at about 6 so it was still pretty empty.

image

I personally find the prices for their beef quite high, and I’m not such a lover for steak anyway.. so I decided to go for their beef pot pie. Hubby had a 250g rib eye. We both topped up 12 bucks for the complete meal.

image

One thing good about this place is, once you step in, they ask you if you want cold water or warm water.

Instead of “still or sparkling sir?”

You get my drift.

image

Appetizer was some grilled fish with a broccoli bed. Oh topped with some caviar too. Nice 🙂 both of us gobbled it up within 2 minutes coz we were famished haha.

image

Their warm, soft and fluffy bread which I couldn’t get enough of. The outside was crispy fyi.

image

Clam chowder soup with many clams inside. Again very comforting as the weather was cold and wet that day.

image

Hubby’s rib eye! I was telling hubby the fact that he had a good steak the first time here doesn’t mean this time will be good too.

But tada – he was not disappointed. It was still good la!

image

And my beef pot pie came looking rather silly. Hahaha. Don’t u think it looks like a spaceship??

image

Better view of the dome. I couldn’t wait to see what was inside!

image

The crust was so thin it broke through easily, revealing a bowl full of beef stew.

I dumped the crust all inside the stew to soak it wet. The gravy was quite salty I thought (it will be very salty for others in general coz i’m someone who can take salt v well). The portion of beef was very generous and they were tender and flavourful. I was totally stuffed when I was done. It was really a big dinner.

image
We could choose between 3 desserts – tiramisu, peppermint mousse and mango sorbet. I got the peppermint mousse in the form of a cake. Was quite disappointed coz the staff did not mention it was a cake. Oh well.

image

Hubby’s tiramisu was beautiful though! Very rich and chocolatey 🙂

Bill was about $144 in total. Service was quite okay in my opinion – I tend to be a lot more forgiving than hubby. When the waiter gave him the dessert choices in 1 straight sentence without any space in between, hubby immediately shot back “wow your dessert name is very long.” Lol.

Water was refilled very promptly and our courses came very quickly too. I’ve got nothing to complain about really!

We were done at about 715 pm and we staggered down to Gucci with our big tummies.

image

Besides the wallet which I got, I also bought the bag on the right. It was on 30 percent sale and I’ve always liked their standard design (yes even more so than the lv monogram design).. couldn’t resist! After discount this was $837. Cheaper than my wallet which was $1040!

image
My wallet in dark brown. Totally looks like a big slab of dark chocolate don’t you think. It smells and feels very luxurious as all new leather wallets do.

image
This patent range is also on 30 percent discount too. Their flap wallet costs just $511 after discount leh. But it is very stiff and feels plastic too. And yes the zip is also plastic. =_=

Service at Gucci was very good. Zay was the lady who served us and she was very patient with the very indecisive me.

My buys. Thank you Financial Controller XD

CocoRoselle Coconut Sugar – Healthy Sugar Alternative (Paleo friendly)

Eating correctly is THE  main solution to ensuring longevity and good health. Many people don’t realise that, simply because the benefits of eating correctly do not show themselves immediately. Likewise, if you eat junk food that’s filled with additives/ chemicals (i.e. NOT food), you will not see the immediate downsides. You will probably realise it ten twenty years later when you get diagnosed with cancer. By then it’s too late.

Ok I am being extreme I know. But you get what I mean right?

Yes, I can see you nodding your head. But in an hour or so, you will probably end up eating some processed food for lunch. *yawn*

OK anyway, today I wanna talk about this great sugar alternative that I received in my mail some time back!

2014-11-13-10-45-26_deco

Organic. Raw. Low GI. Healthy. SOUNDS GOOD.

Now, I am starting to prefer organic stuff.

Definition of “organic” –

“(of food or farming methods) produced or involving production without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or other artificial chemicals.”

Essentially, food grown using organic methods do not have chemicals. The fact that you don’t see pesticides on your vegetables does not mean that they aren’t present. You wash already – also does not mean that they are gone. I know, i sound very kia-see (scared to die) but if you think like a mum, you got young kids and all, the last thing you wanna do is to poison your loved ones slowly.

You can say “aiya our ah-ma ah-gong (grandma grandpa), mummy daddy have been eating these stuff and they are fine!”

It’s your personal decision ultimately – but I am starting to realise the gravity of such things. Maybe I am getting old.

And I will be one year older as of next Monday. LOL.

2014-11-13-10-45-44_deco

Check them out on social media!

I was very curious about how the sugar will look like so I poured it out on a piece of paper.

2014-11-13-10-48-42_deco

Looks yummy already. It’s really ‘sand-like’ as stated on the card!

2014-11-13-10-46-31_deco

Love this modern design. By the way, artificial sweetener isn’t food u know?

MYXJ_20141113110307_fast

I was so sleepy this morning – kept waking up last night. So I made my second cuppa coffee at 11am and added CocoRoselle coconut sugar – my coffee turned out sweeter than usual (which I prefer actually) but it’s great knowing that this sugar is a healthy sugar alternative 🙂

I was just browsing their website – they don’t have a Singapore retailer currently, but do check out their online retailers and see if they ship to Singapore! Then you can also enjoy good sugar 🙂

Artisteaq Art Jam at Mandarin Gallery

You know what – I wish I am painting now. Just idly dabbing away on the canvas, without any care for anything else.

I had my very first experience of painting a proper art piece on canvas last Friday. 3 hours per session and it wasn’t enough for a beginner like me. But still, that 3 hours was such a time of freedom and peace. To me, it was pure idling away, a supreme luxury.

My girl and I reached Artisteaq rather early so we decided to check out its cafe. I needed my afternoon caffeine shot so I ordered a cappuccino and also an apple cake to share with my girl.

We sat by the windows.  There was this whole row of low tables and sofa chairs – very comfortable looking. My girl settled right in with her newly borrowed library books – within 1 minute she was lost in her world of The Sewer Demon.

2014-09-17-17-53-05_deco

My coffee arrived in a elegant wooden tray. No sugar again.. I didn’t bother asking. If you are wondering what I’m talking about, read my review on GastroSmiths and how they serve coffee with sugar on the side!

2014-09-17-17-53-26_deco

My coffee came with a few biscuits, which my girl automatically took and started chomping away happily. She took a few gulps of my coffee too. Runs in the family.

2014-09-17-17-53-53_deco

I wished there was more time for us to just laze there and just do nothing in particular.

2014-09-17-17-54-23_deco

This was their apple cake, I believe it’s one of their signature dishes. I find it quite nice – think my girl found it too soft and squishy. It’s a very moist cake.

We hurriedly finished the cake (the cake took so long to come) and went next door for our art jam session.

20140912_170654

It was like a classroom. we put our bags on the shelves at the back of the classroom and then wore our aprons. All the materials were prepared nicely for us already.

20140912_161201I flipped through the painting samples and settled on a woman dozing off on her chair. (yah you can safely say that I wish I can be that woman!)

Time just ZOOMED past when we were painting. My girl was very quiet through out the whole session, talking only when she needed help with squeezing out the paint or tearing away the dirty palette. First time I see her so focused on something for such a long period of time!

I thought I had to help her with her painting when I was done with mine – BUT she actually finished first…. =_= and i very nearly couldn’t finish!

We happily brought home our paintings. and we were tired.

So here’s her finished art piece:

20140912_195354I really applaud her determination to finish such a big painting – it’s not easy for a girl like her who hates to do any form of hard work ahahaha.

Basically I googled this picture and I helped her draw Sarah’s head (a circle) on the blank canvas to help her gauge the rough sizes of the pictures she should draw. Then she did everything else on her own! very good job I say!

20140912_195417

And this is mine. On its own i think I pass. Pass because i think she looks like what she is – a woman.

Then I did a comparison with the original:

Moldiv_1410577453439

I think, I have just made that woman look so horrid in my painting… The woman in the original painting looks so sexy and voluptuous.. while mine looks like a creature with an oversized face and super short arms. I did not notice the boobs part in the printout that was given to me in class. maybe resolution of that picture isn’t too good.

But having said all that, my girl and I still enjoyed myself SO MUCH at the art jam! I am already thinking of purchasing art materials and going to the park or the beach with my girl and just paint all day. Wish I can do this at home though..but it may be a bit messy and there is no space at home to place any easel!

I even checked out adult art classes – expensive man – each class can cost up at $90!!! Think I will just paint on my own on drawing block paper (hahaha) and then maybe go NAFA for a proper art course when the girls are older…

Just saying.. 🙂
